Dragon Up

An elated Musk tweeted from the control room:

Dragon in orbit, comm locked and solar arrays active!!

This interview with Elon Musk from Science Friday summarizes what happens next and the significance of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket. ¬†It does, however, refer to the aborted Saturday morning launch, which was rescheduled for the 3 a.m. hour today.

The Money Quote (and many other money quotes thereafter, around 6:50 in)

“I think, real rockets should land on their thrusters.”

As in, like in sci-fi flicks where the rocket has a controlled descent onto its thrusters instead of gliding to a landing. He elaborates on the future of Space exploration around 12 minutes in, a topic Musk always seems to do very well with.

More cool stuff:

A series of photos from today’s launch and the aborted Saturday launch.

Here’s a list from NASA of places in the U.S. where you can see the Dragon capsule in orbit.

There’s also the post-launch press conference with NASA from Cape Caneveral, from around 5 a.m. this morning.

Science Sunday

Ugh. I know. More SpaceX and Neil DeGrasse Tyson. Get the fuck over it.
