Of Seizures and Ultra-Marathons

Diane Van Deren runs Ultras. She wins races that may last 28 hours and cover the length of three or more marathons. Sometimes even 100 miles. That isn’t what makes Deren interesting. Part of her success comes from having had a piece of her brain removed. That story comes from Deren’s practice of treating her occasional seizures by doning her running shoes. When she felt the “aura” before a seizure – a premonition of impending seizure also common in migraine sufferers – she’d rush to put her shoes on an start running. It stopped her seizures, for a while.
Listen to the full story. It’s a little old, but maybe it’ll turn you on to Radiolab as well.
